The importance of publication in internationally refereed journals has been increasingly emphasized in Chinese universities. However, little is known about Chinese researchers ’ experiences of writing English papers for scholarly publication. The research explores a young lecturer ’ s experiences of writing to publish in an English journal. Designed as a longitudinal ethnographic study, it generated data through collection and analysis of a variety of texts and through interviews with the young scholar at different stages of drafting. The findings reveal the unequal discourse power the participant faced in writing and publishing in such a journal and how he acted to cope with the difficulties and gradually negotiated a legitimate membership in the Anglophone academic community. The findings are particularly illuminative of Archer ’ s argument that the participant can work as a reflexive agent, and through interacting with linguistic, socio-cultural constraints and enablements achieve personal development. The study contributes to our understanding of young Chinese academics working in relative isolation but breaking into a global academic community.
