Classical education stressed studying the classical languages andclassical literature, focusing on cultivating the students character and intellectualability. It occupied a dominant position in school education of the 19 th century.However, with the development of natural sciences and the rise of science educa-tion, classical education was criticized by some educators. In order to safeguardthe tradition of British classical education, Thomas Arnold and his son MatthewArnold, Newman and Livingstone, etc. defended the classical education of Brit-ain, and illuminated the significance of classical education from different perspec-tives. They made a contribution to the maintenance of classical humanities inBritish education. Today, in the modern university education and the cultivationof university humanistic spirit, the classical humanities still play important roles.
