A Gathering of Muse's Messengers in Beijing:A Review of 2008 Beijing International Congress on Women in Music

2008北京国际女音乐家大会于4月18日—22日在中国北京举行。本届国际女音乐家大会由中国音乐学院、国际女音乐家联合会、国家大剧院、中国交响乐团、中国交响乐发展基金会和北京市妇女联合会六家单位联合主办。来自美国、韩国、古巴、加拿大、瑞士、印度、阿根廷、委内瑞拉、阿塞拜疆、比利时、新西兰。

The 2008 Beijing International Congress on Women in Music was held in Beijing,China from Apdl 18-22,2008. The event was co-organized by the China Conservatory of Music,the International Alliance for Women in Music,the National Performing Arts Centre of China,China National Symphony Orchestra,China Symphony Development Foun- dation and the Beijing Women's Federation.Present at the congress were more than 100 women composers and musi- cians from 28 countries and regions,i.e.the US,Korea, Cuba,Canada,Switzerland,India,Argentina, Venezuela,Azerbaijan,Belgium,New Zealand,Austda, Bosnia and Herzegovina,Malaysia,Australia,the UK, France,Germany,Italy,Russia,Romania,the Nether- lands,Mexico,Japan and China(including the regions of Hong Kong,Macao and Taiwan).The five-day congress featured 12 concerts,two lectures and one music workshop. Participants also include such world-renowned women composers as Anne Kilstofte(IAWM President), Deon Pdce(President of the National Association of Composers/USA),Chan-Hae Lee(Past President of Korean Women Composers Association),and Tania León(Afro-Cuban composer).Works of over 40 wom- en composers from the host country China were also selected to participate in the congress,such as Qu Xixian,Xin Huguang,Sun Yilin,Liu Zhuang,Gu Jian- fen,Zhu Jie,Zhang Zhuoya,Lei Lei,Li Yiding (Congress Chair)and young women composers inlcud- ing Zhang Ning,Tao Yu,Liu Qing,and Xie Wenhui, as well as Chinese women composers from overseas or the regionds of Hong Kong,Macao and Taiwan such as Chen Yi and Wang Qiang.Some men com- posers such as Qin Yongcheng,Wang Xilin,Jin Xiang, Yao Henglu and Wang Ning also participated in the congress,adding their enthusiasm to the heat of the event. Altogether 12 concerts were organized during the congress,featuring 114 music works from 28 countries and regions,95 percent of which were composed by women.The concerts'programmes presented various types of music,including orchestral music,stdng mu- sic,chamber music,traditional Chinese music,vocal music,electronic music and world music. Eight papers were delivered in English at the congress,most of which focused on the research on famous women composers in various countries since the 19th and 20th century.In addition,five Chinese papers were also delivered. American woman composer Martha Mooke's music workshop was very successful,winning much applaude from the audience by presenting her own music works of various styles on electronic violin and Yamaha in- struments. This was the very first time that China hosted such an international congress of women composers, but the congress's traditions and purposes were very well displayed there.IAWM President Dr.Anne Kil- stofte said in her letter to Congress Chairwoman Li Yiding,'You are creating history by hosting in China the International Congress for Women in Music,and making the tradition of hosting the congress in different countries go on.'
