HeikeMonogatari, which narrates the turbulent history of the interim time between Heian and Kamakura periods, also reflects the functions of trade between the Song Dynasty and Japan. Through this trade, the Heike family gained great wealth, upgraded military strength and reopened Japan’s maritime traffic. At the same time, the Heike family got to know about Chinese advanced culture through trade and developed its own unique culture. All of this reflects the fact that trade with the Song Dynasty not only shouldered the mission of commodity circulation but also conducted the cultural transmission, and thus forms a part of Maritime Silk Road.
