DIAGNOSING IBM PC/XT'S HARD-DISK FAILURE BY SOFTWARE

本文简要地介绍了IBM PC/XT的硬盘工作原理和硬盘ROM BIOS,对硬盘故障信息进行了详尽的分析。在叙述了几种常用的硬盘故障诊断方法后,提出了硬盘故障诊断的另外两种方法,即小程序法和大程序法,并给出了诊断实例。在分析了硬盘ROM BIOS和硬盘控制命令的基础上,开发了一个硬盘故障诊断系统MHDTEST,该系统能反映硬盘故障的详尽信息,指出故障原因,确定故障位置,操作简便。文中还对硬盘诊断程序MHDTEST作了介绍。

This paper briefly described the principle how an IBM PC/XT's hard-disk works and the hard-disk ROM BIOS. The failure messages for hard-disk were analysed in detail, commonly used methods for diagnosing hard-disk failture are presented. Besides, two other methods are given: small-program-method and large-program-method. Practical examples for diagnosing failure are presened as well. Based on the analysis of hard-disk ROM BOIS and the commands for hard-disk control, a hard-disk diagnosing system MHDTEST has been developed by the author. The system has following features:(1) the full information of hard-disk failure can be reflected; (2)the cause of failure can be indicated; (3)the location of failure can be pointed out; and (4)the system is convenient in operation. The hard-disk failure diagnosing program MHDTEST are introduced in this paper.
