The paper examines the foundation of distance education, its historical development and the information technologies. In the history, there have been two different traditions of distance education: distance classroom teaching and correspondence teaching. They have distinctive pedagogical characteristics and cost structures. However, new generation of technologies knowledge media, as the convergent outcomes of computer technologies, electronic communications technologies and cognitive sciences, is going to combine the two traditions together. Knowledge media will make a great contribution to the university innovation through significant development of distance education.
