50年代中后期台湾海峡曾几度出现紧张局势,成为远东地区的一个热点,尤其是1958年夏秋之交由金门炮战而引发的危机几乎走到中美两国为台湾问题兵戎相见的地步。本文主要着眼于回顾这次危机期间美国的台湾政策的演变,分析美国当时对台政策的内容和目标,探究美国的台湾政策的历史发展轨迹。

This essay reviews the American policy toward Taiwan and the Offshore Islands in 1958. It points out that the measures taken by the United States were aimed at containing the military operations by the Kuomintang and the Communists over the Taiwan Strait with limited U.S. armed involvement, and thereby separating Taiwan from the mainland.
