Modernization Development and Traditional Chinese Culture

在现代化发展过程中 ,中国传统文化重新受到关注 ,这是因为西方的思维方式和价值观念也在强烈地、持续地冲击着中国传统文化 ,从而造成了中国人在文化层面上的精神“磨难” ,引发了种种偏离现代化追求初衷的社会后果。在探讨现代化发展过程中传统与现代、东方文化与西方文化的关系时 ,一个不能回避的实质性追问是 ,如果物质现代化的实现不能够导致精神处境的普遍改善 。

In the course of modernization development, traditional Chinese culture has rega ined attention. This is because Western mode of thinking and concept of value ha s an intense and sustained impact on traditional Chinese culture, thus bringing about the spiritual “suffering” to Chinese in terms of culture and triggering a variety of social consequences deviating from the original intention of the pu rsuit of modernization. In the inquiry into the relationship between tradition a nd modernism and between Eastern culture and Western culture in the course of mo dernization development, an unavoidable substantive query is: if the accomplishm ent of material modernization cannot lead to the general improvement of spiritua l situation, is it a departure from the original intention of our pursuit of mod ernization?
