Brief Comments on Tan Si-tong's Theoretic Contributions to the News of Modern China

在资产阶级维新派掀起的国人第一次办报高潮中,谭嗣同对初步形成的中国近代新闻理论作出了自己独特的贡献。强调报刊是助兴民权的"权力最大者",可以也应当成为实现维新派政治目标的最重要最有力手段,是其办报思想的核心观点;指出日报为"助人日新之具",直接关系国人贤愚,国家存亡,民族兴衰,是其办报思想的极重要观点;提出"报章总宇宙文体说"的原创性理论,是其为中国近代报刊第一次文体文风变革贡献的一块理论基石。

During the first climax of running newspapers sponsored by the reformers of Chinese Bourgeoisie, Tan Sitong gave his special contributions to the Modern Chinese news theory, which was formed preliminarily at that time. The essence of his sponsoring newspapers was his emphasis on which the newspaper should have the greatest power over promoting civil rights, and on which might and also should be the most important and powerful means to realize the political outline of the Reformers. He, too, pointed out the theory of creativity that the newspaper article should embrace universal styles, which is a theoretical milestone, and which contributes to the revolution of newspaper styles in recent China.
