The literary translator assumes two different roles in the translation process: first, as a reader of the original work; second, as a creator of the translated version. As a result, he is inevitably affected by his linguistic proficiency, value system, as well as principles of translation and forced into creative treason in literary translation, which helps the translation resemble the original work rather than betray it in spirit and diminish its artistic value. But to achieve creative treason in literary translation, the translator's creative activities must be based on the premises of functional equivalence.
