Sylvia Plath has become a heroine and martyr of the feminist movement. In fact, she was first of all a martyr to the recurrent psychodrama that staged itself in the theatre of her tragically wounded psyche and personality. Ariel, which contains her best poems on death, defines a nihilistic metaphysic from which death provided the only true escape.
