The Gothic novel reveals the relationship between women and patriarchy to be far more complex than one of oppression and resistance. Protagonists and authors of these works, both heavily feminine groups, show conflicting sentiments towards patriarchy and its representatives and symbols. Such ambivalence is a form of the 18thcentury middleclass's critique of the burgeoning capitalist model of production.
