电影文本《最后的武士》展示了一幅美国人眼中的近代日本形象,即注重于军事和经济等物质因素的发展,忽视甚至摧毁了民族精神的根基——传统的武士道精神。在批评和否定日本形象的同时,也折射出美国人对于自身的反思,即不断地对外族发动侵略战争的同时也背弃了美国人追求自由平等、民主的民族精神。这些批判和反思对当今中国有启示作用,即只有批判地继承中国的传统文化,才不至于在多元的世界格局中迷失自我,才能找到未来的自我发展方向。

The movie The Last Samurai reproduces a scene of modern Japan in the eye of American,which focuses on the development of military force and economy,ignoring and even destroying Japanese national spirit-the traditional spirit of bushido. While the criticism has been made to Japan at that time,this movie conveyed introspection of Americans themselves that invasions of other countries deviate from the American national spirit of liberty,equality and democracy. At the same time,the criticism and profound consideration are illuminating. Only inheriting the traditional culture of our own country discriminatingly can we avoid being lost in the context of multi-cultural world and determine the direction of development in the future.
