The cover photo captures the Urumqi Glacie r No.1(43°08’N,86°8 2’E),located in the headwaters of the Urum qi River in Tian Shan,north west China,on 27 August 201 7.The research expedi tion led by Professor Li Zhong-qin focused on the glacier mass balance and associated processes at this best m onitored glacier with the longest data series in China and one of the re ference glaciers in World Glacier Monitoring S ervice(WGMS).The image shows the east branch of Urumqi Glacier No.1 after snowfall,which has melted into two independen t glaciers since 1993.
