A Comparative Study of the Emotional Coloring about Crow in Chinese and Western Culture

在陶渊明的自传文《五柳先生传》中,陶隐去籍贯、姓字,独留号五柳先生,自有深意.在'上品无寒门,下品无士族'的东晋社会,一个人的出身基本决定了今后的人生走向.古人通过籍贯、姓字便可推知一个人的家世、社会地位,陶渊明隐去籍贯、姓字,放弃自身社会符号,体现了对当时门阀世风的批判,更多地表明了归隐的决心.陶自号'五柳先生'并非只是因为'宅边有五柳树','五柳'的选择有纪念先祖的意味,但更主要是对以往青春的祭奠和对今后归隐生活的向往.

In the course of Chinese and Western cultural development,crow is endowed with complex and contradictory cultural meaning. In China,it predicts both ominousness and auspiciousness. And it stands for a special culture of filial piety. In the West,besides good omen and bad omen,it is also a symbol of holy and evil. So we can conclude that there are resemblance and difference between Chinese and Western cultures. The resemblance is the result of the crow characters and human beings natural traits. This is an age of cultural exchange. During these cultural exchanges,we should not only tap our cultural potential,but also put our views on the advanced cultures all over the world. And during adopting the Western culture,selecting the refined and discarding the crude should act as our sensible choice.
