This comprehensive study of the artifacts and historical materials discovered in Xinghua and Dafeng counties since 1952 reviews the discussions about the life and family history of Shi Naian which these materials provoked. The author points out contradictions and questionable points in some of the documents, and concludes that the materials do not substantiate the view some scholars advance, that Shi Yanduan, ancestor of the Shi family in the area of Xinghua and Dafeng, was Shi Naian, the author of Shui Hu Zhuan (Outlaws of the Marsh or Water Margin).(p. 185)
