70 Years’ Translation of Tibetan Gnomic Verses Since the Founding of the People’s Republic of China

2019年是中华人民共和国建国70周年,也是西藏民主改革60周年。兹以此文表示纪念。本文概述新中国成立70年以来藏族格言诗翻译情况,分为四个时期,即:新生时期(1950—1965年)、沉寂时期(1966—1976年)、全面时期(1977—1999年)与深入时期(2000年以后)。在国内,藏族格言诗的翻译与中央对西藏和藏族文化的关心密切相关,中央民族政策极大促进了藏族格言诗的翻译。在国际上,藏族格言诗翻译受到世界藏学发展、中国对外开放、中国国力增强等因素的影响。在这70年期间,最初只是《萨迦格言》得到关注并被翻译,随着时代进步,其他格言诗被逐渐汉译和外译。藏族格言诗翻译的成就充分表明了中国文化的魅力和传播力,体现出翻译在文化与文明共生和互鉴中的重大作用。

2019 marks the 70 th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China and the 60 th anniversary of the democratic reform in Tibet.This paper is a commemoration.It summarizes the translation of Tibetan gnomic verses in the 70 years’history since the founding of the People’s Republic of China,which is divided into four periods,the beginning period(1950—1965),the silent period(1966—1976),the overall period(1977—1999)and the deepening period(since 2000).At home,the translation of Tibetan gnomic verses was closely related to the concern of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China for Tibet and Tibetan culture.It is the policy of the Central Committee the Communist Party of China towards nationalities that greatly promoted the translation of Tibetan gnomic verses.Abroad,the translation of Tibetan gnomic verses was promoted by the development of Tibetology in the world,China’s opening-up,the strengthening of China’s national power,and the raised position of China in the world.During these 70 years,only Sakya Gnomic Verses was heeded and translated at first.With the advancement of times,other gnomic verses were gradually translated into Chinese and foreign languages.The achievements made in the translation of Tibetan gnomic verses fully displays the charm and the power of transmission of Chinese culture,embodying the key role of translation in the intergrowth and mutual learning of culture and civilization.
