With the focus on Jim,the British Empire gentleman shaped by Conrad,this essay analyses the British gentleman's brilliant image,his oriental complex and his cause of civilizing the other,and explores Conrad's dual attitudes towards the British Empire colonialism-criticizing the colonial aggressors represented by Brown,and glorifying the colonial civilizers by Jim. Facing the output of western ideology through literary works,we should take advantage of discourse power,and break the western logocentrism so as to promote the coexistence and development of multi-culturalism.
