Postcolonial criticism represents a significant perspective in contemporary biblical studies. As one of the pioneering figures of postcolonial biblical criticism, R. S. Sugirtharajah provides a comprehensive overview of the origin, definitions, and reading strategies of this method. Taking as its research focus Sugirtharajah’s two recent works, Exploring Postcolonial Biblical Criticism and The Bible and Asia, this article explores the complex relationship between the Bible and empire; traces the criticism back to its early historical context, method, and practice; and analyzes the relationship between postcolonial criticism and biblical studies. We find that Sugirtharajah’s postcolonial biblical criticism is in constant evolution. Meanwhile, the article also offers a general review of Sugirtharajah’s scholarship from both practical and theoretical perspectives.
