This essay presents a narrative analysis of Genesis 19:30-31. It first identifies the boundaries of the narrative, clarifying the start and end points of the narrative. Analysis of the narrative structure reveals that sexual intercourse between Lot and his daughters is the central event, but the text remains silent as to its moral evaluation. The essay then examines the narrative verse by verse, with an emphasis on its literary devices: gaps, thematic motifs and conventions. It examines possible analogies between this narrative and other narratives in the book of Genesis, which enable readers to glean insights into the central moral issue. From exposition to characterization, this essay explores the means the writer uses to gain and focalize readers’ attention, and via these explores the subtleties of the implied moral evaluations in this passage.
