浅谈《红楼梦》中人物服饰的文化含义与翻译——以杨宪益、戴乃迭英译本为例

On Costume Culture and Translation in A Dream of Red Mansion:Taking Yang Hsien-yi and Gladys Yang’s Version as an Example

《红楼梦》是中国古典文学的瑰宝,具有巨大的文学价值。其中红楼人物衣着百态,人物服饰极具特色。各式服饰折射出了丰富的民族、社会文化内涵。笔者以杨宪益、戴乃迭的英译本为例,分析译文对原著所蕴含的文化意义的把握,探讨其中的得失,为寻求更为合适的翻译途径提供参考。

A Dream of Red Mansion boasts of its value as the gem of Chinese classical literature,in which all the characters’ clothes are different with their own unique styles. The clothing described in this novel reflected the diverse culture and social reality of feudal China. Based on Yang Hsien-yi and Gladys Yang’s translation of A Dream of Mansion,the paper attempted to discuss how the cultural connotation of clothing as reflected in this novel was treated and rendered in the Yangs’ version,and summarized the translators’ gains and losses for the further improvement of the translation of this novel.
