In the paper,scientific research progress of Yellow River water conservation for 40 years is summarized.Situation faced by water resources protection is analyzed. Key problems that should be urgently solved in water resources protection are identified. Yellow River water resources protection are proposed in the future in the aspects of ecological environment monitoring and evaluation,ecological environment system evolution law,water resources function mechanism,ecological environment water quantity allocation and regulation management,sudden water pollution incident emergency scheduling,early warning of water environment carrying capacity,important ecological water protection and restoration waters as well as main research direction and topics.
