The Awakening and Disillusionment in the Waves and Thunderstorm——A Comparative Study of the Female Protagonists in the Awakening and the Thunderstorm

美国女作家凯特·肖邦的《觉醒》和中国剧作家曹禺的《雷雨》讲述了两位生活在不同时代、不同文化中的女主人公相似的觉醒历程和相同的结局。尽管文化背景不同,但父权文化对两名女性是同样的残忍。因此,现代社会应给予女性更多的宽容,使女性拥有更多的自主选择,实现两性平等和谐发展。

The Awakening by Kate Chopin and The Thunderstorm by Cao Yu portray two female protagonists,who have similar awakening processes that result in their tragic fates although they live in different times and are brought up in different cultural backgrounds. A comparative study of the two women can easily show the cruelty of the patriarchal society towards women no matter what kinds of cultural backgrounds in which they live. Therefore,modern society should breed more tolerance and flexibility which can grant women more independence and options so that the two sexes can equally make progress.
