Ideas on Reform of English Textbooks for Beginners

近三十年的教学实践让笔者深切痛彻地思考启蒙英语教材的改革问题。改革的重点是语音教学。语音是学好英语的基础和必要条件。因此,在启蒙教材中,科学地编排语音教学体系,全面完整地学习语音基础知识,可以使英语教学事半功倍。事实证明,语音基础不好或不牢,英语教学事倍功半。

What has disturbed me deeply and strongly for nearly 30 years is how to reform the English text - books for beginners.Phonetics teaching is the key to the reform.Phonetics is fundamental and essential for English study. Therefore twice the result can be accomplished with half the effort if a scientific system of phonetic teaching materials has been compiled in the beginners’ books and phonetics has systematically been taught to the student beginners. Facts prove that the English teaching of the past 30 years in China hasn’ t been so satisfactory due to inadequacy of phonetics teaching.
