Cultural Differences between English and Chinese Color Terms

本文通过对英汉颜色词文化上不等值问题的探讨,说明由于语言习惯、历史背景、传统风 俗等方面的差异,表示颜色的方法和用词有很多不同,对同一颜色的理解也有很大差别。因此,了解 并掌握这些颜色词及所构成词汇的差异,对中外文化交流及翻译实践研究有一定的实际意义。

This paper attempts a discussion of the cultural inequivalence of color terms between English and Chinese, indicating that due to different language habits, historic background, traditional customs and so on, there are many cultural differences in the use of colors and color terms as well as in the understanding and mastering of the same color. Therefore, it is practically useful to know and study the cultural differences, thus promoting the cultural communication and translation practice.
