“Kings of Trees” in Fujian

古树名木是历史与文化的象征,是自然界和前人留下的宝贵遗产、绿色文物和活化石,具有珍贵的历史价值、极高的生态价值、深厚的文化价值、重要的科研价值、丰富的旅游价值和可观的经济价值。

Since 2013, the Green Committee of Fujian Province and the provincial forestry department has been in the campaign to elect kings of trees. The criteria for the tree candidates of this province-wide election are as follows: 1. living and complete( which means the would-be king should not be recently potted or transplanted); 2. among one of the oldest, the tallest and the ones with the widest diameter of trunk, largest tree crowns, the strangest shape and the highest value. The old trees to be elected should meet at least one of the standards mentioned above. For the first election, the king of Pinus massoniana, Fujian cypress,ginkgo and seven other trees were selected.
