Hepu of Beihai used to be a starting point for marine trading and ancient Maritime Silk Road dated back in the Han Dynasty. The Han tomb group here bears testimony to the once prosperous silk road. Relics in the ancient town of Dalang(Sea Wave) and Caoxie(Straw-shoe) Village offer a glimpse to the flourishing good old days. Former residence of Bailong(White Dragon) Town, a birthplace of southern pearl culture, has a wellknown legend: the pearl-producing clams and oysters, which had long gone, returned to the town because of the good governance of a saint. Beihai, joining hands with other eight cities on the route of the Maritime Silk Road, filed for UNESCO Cultural Heritage Programs. Now it has official y made the cut for the waiting list.
