Review of the Relationship between the Shi Hexagram of The Book of Changes and The Art of War

《易经》的《师卦》讲军队作战之事,强调军队任用将领要审慎处理,整个卦谈的是统帅之道。《孙子兵法》是一部兵学经典,共十三篇,谈的是军事战略战术思想,其中《计篇》有"五事",即"道、天、地、将、法",其"将"之"五德"是任用将领的基本条件。《孙子兵法》有明显承袭《易经》智慧的关系。本文从实践或应用立场,将对军事将领的品格能力,综合为制度力、授权力、决策力、执行力、领导力、激励力等六力管理。

The shi hexagram of The Book of Changes mainly interprets the issues concerning the army fighting, which emphasizes that the army should be prudent in appointing military commanders. The entire hexagram talks about the theory concerning military commanders. The Art of War is a classic book on military science, which is comprised of 13 chapters interpreting the military strategies and tactics. In the chapter of Estimates, five fundamental factors—politics, weather, terrain, commander, and doctrine—are mentioned. As far as commander is concerned, the commander stands for the general's qualities of wisdom, sincerity, benevolence, courage and strictness. So The Art of War remarkably inherits wisdom of The Book of Changes. From the angle of practice and application, this summarizes the general's qualities into six abilities—system ability, authorization ability, decision-making ability, executive ability, leadership ability and incentive ability.
