Read The Art of War to Understand the Rules for Acting as a Military General

《孙子兵法》中蕴含着丰富的为将之道,其思想精华主要体现在:"将者,智信仁勇严也"——为将者必须具备全面过硬的素质;"将有五危,不可不察也"——为将者必须具备健全、理智的性格;"凡用兵之法,君命有所不受"——为将者必须具备勇于担当的精神;"知彼知己,胜乃不殆;知天知地,胜乃可全"——为将者必须具备洞察全局的能力;"令之以文,齐之以武"——为将者必须具备文武相兼的治军理念。

The Art of War contains rich rules for acting as a military general. Its thinking essence mainly is embodied in the following aspects. First, the general stands for the virtues of wisdom, sincerely, benevolence, courage and strictness, which means a military commander should have superior personal quality. Second, there are five dangerous faults which may affect a general. It means a general must have a sound and sane character. Third, in the operation of war, commands of the sovereign may not be obeyed, which means a general should have the spirit of play. Fourth, If you know the enemy and know yourself, your victory will not stand in doubt; if you know Heaven and know Earth, you may make your victory complete, which means a general should have the ability to have an insight into the overall situation. Fifth, soldiers must be treated in the first instance with humanity, but kept under control by means of iron discipline, which means a general must have the army directing idea being accomplished with both the pen and the sword.
