Due to the eutrophication of water bodies, the harmful algae(HABs) are prevalent in freshwater ecosystems around the world, causing serious harm to human and ecosystem health. It is necessary to make a reasonable and effective way to predict and manage harmful algae, and it needs to have a deeper understanding of the occurrence, scope and time of harmful algae. This paper takes the large shallow lake Taihu as an example, summarizes the relevant research at home and abroad in recent years to discuss the definition, formation mechanism, prediction model and influencing factors of harmful algae, and points out the shortcomings of the current research and suggest the future research direction. Hoping to provide a reference for the process of production and consumption of harmful algae, prediction mechanism and control measures.
