Objective:To evaluate the effects of microvascular decompression on trigeminal neuralgia. Methods:Data from 87 trigeminal neuralgia cases treated with microvascular decompression were analyzed retrospectively and systematically. During the operation we found superior cerebellar artery was pressed in 38 cases and touched in 11 cases; anterior inferior cerebellar artery was pressed in 19 cases and touched in 7 cases; both superior cerebellar artery and anterior inferior cerebellar artery were pressed in 9 cases; innominate vein was touched in 3 cases; and adhered and thickened arachnoid was found in 43 cases. Results:In 87 trigeminal neuralgia cases,78 cases(89.7%)had recovered;7 cases(8.0%)had improved;2 cases(2.3%)did not changed. Conclusion: Microvascular decompression is a safe and efficient way to treat trigeminal neuralgia , especially when there is a marked notch on the trigeminal nerve due to artery compression.
