在中国的历代名砚中,尤以'四大名砚'最为著名。它们分别是产于广东肇庆的端砚、江西婺源的歙砚、甘肃临潭的洮河砚和山西绛州的澄泥砚。其中又以端砚和歙砚最佳,自唐出现以来,便成为砚中至宝。端砚因产地肇庆古称端州而得名。其石质坚实细腻,有'发墨不损毫'、'天寒不结冰'的特质,被誉为中国第一名砚。宋代诗人张九成曾赋诗赞道:'端溪古砚天下奇,紫花夜半吐虹霓。'
There are four types of ink stones with high quality achieved great fame among various ink stones of China. They are the Duan ink stone from Zhaoqing,Guangdong Province, the She ink stone from Wuyuan, Anhui Province, the Taohe ink stone from Lintan, Gansu Province and the Chengni ink stone from Jiangzhou, Shanxi Province. Among the four, the Duan and the She are the best and are regarded as the gems of ink stones by the public.
