In order to study the difference of color discrimination between young and old observers, two display devices(IPAD and QUATO)with different bandwidth were selected with the five color centers recommended by CIE including gray, red, yellow, green and blue.Forty-seven observers including 30 young observers aged from 20 to 27 years and 14 old observers aged from 61 to 74 years with normal color vision were selected to conduct cross-media color matching experiments using the method of simultaneous color matching. The spectral data of target colors and matching colors were collected and substituted into CIE1964 color matching function to calculate CIELAB color difference. It found that there was little color discrimination in color difference between young and old observers. In order to characterize the difference of color discrimination of the observers better, the parameter of the covariance inverse matrix of a*10 b*10 was used to construct the difference of color discrimination colorimetric ellipses of the observers. The results showed that the difference in color discrimination among old observers is greater than that among the young observers, and the old observers have a greater color difference discrimination tolerance on the five color centers.
