金圣叹评点"第六才子书"《西厢记》,是用所谓"消遣法"评点古书"当赠后人",达到以批评鉴赏命世、垂名不朽的目的。他把《西厢记》视为"天地妙文",既充分肯定了《西厢记》的伟大文学价值,也揭示了《西厢记》所反映的人物和事件,是源于人类社会生活本来就存在的"天地自然"。他推重才子、佳人之间所发生的"必至之情",是对封建礼教的公然叛逆。此外,他对艺术虚构、人物塑造、捕捉灵感等问题的论述,都接触到艺术创作的基本规律,有益于艺术创造。

Jin Shengtan's comments on Xi Xiang Ji, with the 'method of relaxation', commended on ancient books and 'making gifts to the prosperity', and to reach the goal of being well known through evaluation and appreciation. He took Xi Xiang Ji as 'writing of heaven and earth', and made a fully acknowledgement of its great value in literature. He also revealed that the characters and incidents in Xi Xiang Ji were rooted in the 'natural heaven and earth' in human social life. He focused on the inevitable feelings between talented young men and pretty women, which was the obvious betraying of feudal disciplines. Furthermore, he had touched the fundamental law of artistic creation through artistic fiction, character creation and inspiration capture, with benefit to artistic creation.
