李文森是20世纪50—60年代美国中国现代思想史研究的大师。他通过对儒家思想在现代中国命运的探讨,将19世纪中叶以来中国传统思想的变迁归之于西方"现代性"的冲击,从而使他成为费正清"冲击—回应"模式的坚决捍卫者。

Levenson is a great master of modern Chinese thought history in U.S.A during 1960s. With a discussion of Confucian China and its modern fate, he maintained that the changes of Chinese tradition thought suffered from western 'modernity' impact since the middle of 19th century. Therefore, he had became a firm defender on 'impactresponse' mode in the realm of American and Chinese thought history.
