Tang Xian-zu and Hainan Island

汤显祖贬谪徐闻期间曾经游历过海南岛,在他此期的一些诗作中有许多对海南自然风光、民族风情及历史文化的生动描绘和独到感受,尤其可贵的是,在描写中表现出了他对海南少数民族的尊重与友善态度。这一人生经历对汤显祖后期的戏剧创作产生了重大的影响,在《邯郸记》中尤其明显。

Tang Xian-zu's poems have testified the fact that Tang had journeyed to Hainan during his banishment in Xuwen of Guangdong. The journey to Hainan had made a significant and good impression on the thought and creation of Tang Xian-zu. In his poems Tang eulogized the picturesque natural landscape and national customs of Hainan, expressing his respect and compassion for the banished officials through the ages and showing his cordiality and friendliness to the Li people. The second half of Han Dan Ji, one of his important plays, is set on Hainan Island. The exotic folk customs and weird colors are the key development of romanticist spirit in Tang Xian-zu's plays.
