The hilly topography makes Hong Kong one of the most densely populated cities in the world. The population density in some urban districts is as high as 5 300 person/km2. In order to meet the land demand for city growth, slope engineering has become an integral component of urban development in Hong Kong. In the old days, key considerations for slope were safety and stability. While the environmental awareness of the general public is increasing, recent slope design not only complies engineering standards and requirements but also incorporates ideas of environmental aesthetics and ecological values. This paper first introduces various applications of bio-mitigation measures for slope improvement in Hong Kong, then their strengths, limitations, feasibility and integrated benefits are discussed and evaluated.
