Gion Festival and Its Trace of Chinese Culture

祇园祭是日本京都八坂神社的例祭,以其悠久的历史、浩大的规模被列为“日本三大祭”之一。它不仅表现出引人入胜的日本传统文化特色,更以汇集东西方不同地域文化的特点而吸引世界的目光。其中,中国文化的影响显而易见,无论在广度还是深度上都有着非常突出的位置。本文通过讨论其成立的历史过程中表现出的与中国文化的渊源关系,探讨在民俗信仰方面中国文化对日本文化的影响。

Gion Festival is a routine memorial ceremony held typically at Yasaka shrine, Kyoto, Japan. It is known as oneof the 3 top sactificial ceremonies in Japan because of its long history and marvelous splendors. It attracts the whole worldbecause it is not only a showcase of the fascinating traditional Japanese culture, but a presentation of a collection of regionalcultures from the West as well as the East. In fact, it is the influence of Chinese culture, which is of depth and of widescope, that holds a prominent position in Gion Festival. Therefore, this article tries to discuss the influence of Chinese cul-ture over the folk customs and religious beliefs of Japanese culture by probing into the relations between Gion Festival and theChinese culture displayed in the process of the establishment and development of Gion Festival.
