Lead is an ancient metal. It causes contamination of air, water and soil, locally and worldwide. Lead is toxic to multiple organ systems. It is established animal carcinogen. It is currently considered by the IARS to be a possible human carcinogen(group 2B) on the basis of ' sufficient' animal date and ' inadequate ' human date. It is reviewed that recent research on the toxicology and carcinogenicity of lead has focused on understanding health effects at relatively low levels of exposure. This work has led an understanding of ' subclinical toxicity ' .
