The shear strength is an important index in mechanical properties of soil and has a larger influence to stability and safety of structures.The strength index characteristics,pore water pressure,effective stress method and total stress method of the foundation soil and their application are introduced in the paper.The adaptability of three test methods and three strength indexes is discussed.And the attention problems are also stressed for geotechnical engineers in selecting the strength indexes.
