“三个代表”重要思想是马克思主义在当代中国的最新发展 ,是新世纪我党建设的伟大旗帜 ,是对我党近 80年历史经验的总结 ,是十三届四中全会以来党和国家伟大实践的结晶。世纪之交 ,江泽民同志提出“三个代表”思想更有其深刻的国际背景 ,这是中国共产党人面对新形势的机遇与挑战 ,特别是严峻的挑战所作出的战略抉择。

The important idea of “Three Represents” is a new development of Marxism in contemporary China, a great banner of the building of our Party in the new century, a summary of the experiences of eighty years' history of our Party, and is conclusion of the great practice of the Party and the state since the Fourth Plenary Session of the Thirteenth National Congress of the CPC. At the turn of the centuries, when Comrade Jiang Zemin advanced the idea of “Three Represents”, there was a profound international background. It was the strategic decision made by the Chinese Communists when they were faced with the opportunity and the challenge in the new situation, and especially the severe international challenge.
