Grammar provides interlocutors with various syntactic structures, and the choice of syntactic structure is constrained by various factors. Verschueren’s theory of adaptation holds that using language is a process of continuously making linguistic choices. This theory throws some light on syntactic transformation from the perspective of adaptation, which provides a new approach to syntax.
