莫言在作品之外提出了大量有关文学创作的看法观点,其中关于作家观有着清晰而明确的论述。作家应当"作为一名老百姓"来写作,而不是刻意"为人民代言"。绝对的创作自由是没有的,所有的创作都是有限制的。创作中最难的就是个性的确立,它包含了两方面:与别人不同的独创性以及与自己不同的超越性。

Besides writing novels,Moyan also puts forward many points of view of literature creation which clearly describes how to be a writer. Instead of speaking for the people,a writer should write as an ordinary person. Absolute creating freedom is impossible. All the creations would be restricted. Personality building is the hardest part in writing,which contains two aspects; the unique creating different from others: and the lasting transcendence different from themselves.
