In Play; Out of Play——On Literary and Practical Character of Liu Jingting

清代《桃花扇》咏剧诗论及柳敬亭,几乎都把重点放在他于明清鼎革后感慨兴亡上。民国以后论者论及柳敬亭,则多强调他的忠诚、侠义、英勇无畏。在古今论者的笔下,他是作为一个正面人物形象而存在的。然而,实际情况是无论在《桃花扇》中,还是作为真实历史人物,他的形象、性格和行为都有不少可议之处,主要是有较浓重的江湖习气和较强的名利观念。

The literary men in the Qing Dynasty paid many attention to Liu Jingting's ponding and sorrowing for historical vicissitude,when they commented his character in the Peach Blossom Fan. The later researchers emphasized his loyalty,heroism and courage. And how no matter what,Liu is a positive character to the readers and audiences. However,there is certainly room for discussion about his image,character and actions as a dramatic role and a real historical figure. He had preserved the strong sophosociety habits and selfish and seeked after fame and profit.
