Virginia was originally forest with a rich understory of early spring blooming herbaceous plants. Theclimate, comfortable most of the year, has long, hotsummers. Thomas Jefferson wrote that shade wasnecessary to enjoy a garden in summer here. Headvocated planting a living parasol of trees for shade, planting the garden beneath them. Olin Partnershiplandscapes are inspired by their regional context. Oneexample is our design for the University of Virginia ArtMuseum, Chapel Hill, Virginia. Native Tuliptrees areplanted in a grid for shade. Beneath these, herbaceousperennials are planted mimicking the forest floor flowerdisplays. The arrangement of the herbaceous plantsreinterprets the geometry of the parterres found in oldVirginia gardens.
