Alternative Teacher Education (ATE) in America generally refers to non-traditional teacher education. With its distinctive features, ATE has, ever since its emergence in the 1980s, made up for the weaknesses of traditional teacher education in America, and contributed properly to alleviating the shortage of teachers and meeting the requirement of the diversification of teaching body in America. However, meantime it brings with itself a series of problems, which can prominently be listed as follows: the teachers trained are still limited in number and dissatisfactory in quality; the candidates are not well supported in terms of practice; the teaching arrangements are less than reasonable; and the whole training modle challenges the idea of Teacher Professionalization, Which is being advocated in America. In the final analysis, the development of ATE in future depends radically on whether it can solve with effect the problems lying ahead.
