沈从文的小说之所以被称为乡土抒情诗 ,是因为他的小说的主体是湘西小说 ,他的创作观念有着梦牵魂萦的湘西情结。他不仅以湘西为参照座标反衬出都市生活的恶浊 ,更重要的是 ,他把具有秀丽的自然景色 ,淳朴的乡风民俗和醇厚的人性的湘西作为一种人生形式的象征。他歌之咏之 ,实际上是在张扬他的理想的人生形式 ,他希望这种优美、健康、自然的人生形式能被现代人所利用 ,从而达到重塑民族性格的目的。

Shen Cong-wen's novels are called local lyrics because most of them are about the Western Hunan and have a sense of deep emotional entanglement with it. In Shen's novels, the Western Hunan sets off by contrast the filth of the city life. The Western Hunan, with her beauty of natural landmarks, her simplicity of custom and human nature, is a symbol of the form of life, of which Mr. Shen sings the praises and in reality is making his ideal form of life widely known, hoping this beautiful, healthy and natural form of life to be adopted by the modern people so as to rebuild their national features.
