Guinea is one of the nations in West Africa where rice is an important andmain staple food for the people. Its rice average yield is only 1.5 tons per hectare, however, muchlower than those in the rest of the world. With the increase of the population, the shortfall inrice production becomes more and more serious. Therefore, it is very important to increase the riceyield. We made the field experiments with the Chinese hybrid rice using modified SRI (system of riceintensification) practices in Guinea from January to May 2003. Compared with Guinea's presentcultivars, the result showed that the Chinese hybrid rice with modified SRI can obtained high yieldswith vast yield potential, and the highest yield was 9232 kg ha^(-1). On April 28, the riceexpertsand officials from Ministry of Agriculture and Animals of Guinea and its Rice Research Institute andSeed Company, the large-size rice farms, Office of FAO in Guinea, China Agri-business Farm (Group)Company, China National Hybrid Rice R&D Centre and Chinese Embassy in Guinea assessed theexperiments conducted in Koba County, Guinea. They gave high praise to these efforts and thought ithas bright future in Guinea.
