The paper briefs the historical background and basic features of local records, analyzes the issues of narrow scope of inclusion and incorrect separation of periods of local records included in the Union Catalog of Chinese Local Chronicles. It points out local records emerged in large quantity after 1905 when the Regulation of Local Records was issued, and the year 1905 should be a reference for separation of periods for local records.
