两千多年的中国古代文学有着自己完备而稳定的体系 ,但到了五四时期 ,这种稳定而封闭的体系 ,受到了来自西方各种主义和思潮的有力冲击和挑战 ,于是古老、封闭、保守的文学体系开始解体了 ,文学的特质、本体、观念以及艺术追求都发生着深刻的变化。作为反映时代变化最敏锐的诗歌 ,在这个新旧交替的时代 ,率先挣脱了传统的羁縻 ,以其崭新的姿态 ,呈现在国人面前。中国诗坛所发生的这种最根本性的变化最重要的表现便是象征主义诗歌运动。中国诗坛所发生的这场革命 ,动摇了中国传统的诗学观 ,使得中国的诗歌创作从以往那种封闭的、单一的模式中解脱出来 ,迈向了开放的、多元的选择。

Chinese classical literature, which has over two thousand years' of history, has a complete and stable system, but the old, closed and conservative literary system began to disintegrate to the period of the May 4th Movement. The characteristics, nature and concpets of literature and its artistical pursuit changed profoundly. In this transitional period from the old to the new, poetry took the lead in struggling to get rid of fettering by tradition, its creations freed itself from the formerly closed, and opened and varied choice.
